Self Help Energy Techniques

Imagine feeling peaceful, connected, accepted, and safe – a creator instead of a victim. By influencing vibrations at the body’s energetic level, we can recover from betrayal and move on to creating our life.

What are energy techniques?

The body is not the solid, three-dimensional object we see with our eyes. Everything is in a state of vibration. Ancient people understood this and now modern physics has verified it – we are all vibrating atomic and sub-atomic particles with lots of “space” in-between. The vibrating energy is sometimes referred to as the bioelectric life force or, more simply, the energy field.

Research shows that mental and emotional states influence a body's energy field so it's no surprise that the powerful emotions of a betrayal are likely to create undesirable changes ("static") in this field.

Several years of exploration, study, and experience have led me to understand some of the energy dynamics involved in getting over betrayal.  Releasing negative emotions and strengthening the connection to "inner power" are two important functions in the healing process. At an energetic level, this means removing “static” in the energy flow, and harmonizing the body’s vibrational patterns.
Energy techniques work on one or both of these aspects via a clearing and “tuning” of the bioelectric field. For a more in-depth understanding of energy healing, refer to the links and books under Resources

 Focus

The following list of energy-healing tools does not rule out the health benefits of other techniques or the use of services offered by the many excellent practitioners trained in these or other healing approaches. My preference is to work on myself first when attempting to correct imbalances. The self-help techniques shared on this site are ones I found to be the most simple and effective.

Important: Please note that I’m not a doctor or mental health practitioner. I’m suggesting these energy techniques for educational purposes only, not as a replacement for proper medical care.

My top four energy techniques:

  • Nature
  • Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
  • Flower Essences
  • Music

1.   Nature

Who hasn’t heard of the healing power of nature? Earth energy, “in the wild”, is vibrating in perfect harmony. This is the pattern we are trying to recapture in our subtle energy bodies.

Our personal energy system is affected by the energy around us, human and non-human. It makes sense for us to attempt to surround ourselves with "good vibrations". This is particularly important when our energy system is “hurt” and we are grappling with painful feelings. Since a betrayal moves us out of balance energetically, we can benefit greatly from immersing ourselves in nature as frequently as possible.

Ideally, you can find a location that feels peaceful to you where you can be relatively undisturbed. Focus on your sense of sight, sound, smell, and touch so your attention rests on your present environment rather than the emotional turmoil. Try sitting or lying down on the ground for periods of time. Walk bare feet in the grass, sand, soil or water. Hug a tree. Feel the wind. Bask in the sunshine.

When it is difficult to get to a wilderness spot, a park or yard with plants and trees works almost as well. There is another choice, feasible for city apartment dwellers or for times when the weather is unpleasant. Purchase some potting soil or play sand or kids’ play dough (one made from salt) and get your hands into a large container-full, feeling and playing with the material.

Try to make contact with nature every day. At some level you will be aligning with the perfectly-tuned energy frequency of earth - healthy therapy for the emotionally wounded.

2.   Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

If, in a self-help toolkit, only one choice was available for clearing energy, EFT would be it. You may have already heard of Emotional Freedom Techniques or will learn about it for the first time on this site.

Gary Craig has developed a type of “psychological acupressure” to remove emotional blockages from the energy system. This simple tapping technique can give remarkable effects in a short period.

EFT is based on the same energy meridians used for thousands of years in traditional, oriental acupuncture, but without the needles. Instead, the person seeking relief uses fingertips to tap six or seven times on each of the well-established energy meridian points on his or her body, and at the same time voices statements about the troublesome emotion or incident. The procedure is usually repeated for several rounds on a specific issue. When no charge is left on the emotion/issue, another problem area can be addressed. It’s hard to believe something this simple works but it does!

The best part of EFT is that the basics of this powerful technique can be learned in less than 30 minutes. To get started, go to www.emofree.com, view the introductory video, then read / download the free EFT manual. Once you’ve memorized the tapping points, you can begin applying the procedure to the current problem.

Many examples of “self-talk” to accompany the tapping are available on the EFT website. Though few examples directly address betrayal-caused trauma, emotions are similar regardless of the cause. Once you become comfortable with the process, you may want to use it to take away the “edge” on still-volatile emotions such as anger, grief, disbelief, abandonment, etc. before applying the technique to specific incidents.

This energy transformation tool provides a potent aide in neutralizing negative emotions and it doesn't matter if the incidents happened 50 minutes or 50 years ago! You may find, as I did, that by continuing to use the EFT tapping sequence to address underlying, long-standing trust issues, deeper healing occurs – the ultimate goal for us all.

3.   Flower Essences

People have been using the vibratory healing properties of botanicals since ancient times. Flower essences were first prepared in their modern form in England in the 1930’s by Dr. Edward Bach. This healing modality is derived from the fresh blossoms of carefully chosen wild plants which are then steeped in spring water. Timing and intention are vital during harvesting. Once the water is "encoded" with the flower's frequency, the blooms are removed and brandy is added as a preservative.

Specific negative emotional states or vibratory patterns are alleviated with the corresponding flower essence. Through his attunement with plant life and his years of field work, Dr. Bach identified 38 such energy-balancing blooms.

Flower essences are safe, gentle, herbal infusions administered by either placing a few drops under the tongue twice a day or placing the drops into a glass of water; either way, the treatment is simple.

Healing practitioners in some countries are now developing herbal infusions using flowers harvested from local, wild plants; however, I found several of the original Dr. Bach remedies appropriate for betrayal issues.

First, I want to mention the Five-Flower Formula, also called Rescue Remedy. This well-known, emergency combination has a calming influence when one needs immediate help for emotional upsets. If you are still coping with the initial shock of betrayal or must continue interacting with your betrayer, the Five-Flower Formula is handy to have around.

I also recommend three individual flower essences that work to balance some of the common emotional issues (vibrational disturbances) accompanying a betrayal.

  • Agrimony – believed to help one to acknowledge and work with emotional pain and obtain true inner peace
  • Elm – understood as providing inner strength to overcome lack of trust, particularly self trust
  • Willow – cited as the essence to balance victim energy; situations where one feels resentment and sees life as unfair

Though I have tried, and continue to use, other flower essences, these three herbal infusions seem to have been the most helpful. With experimentation, you may find additional remedies that address your energy imbalances.

P.S. Looking for a low-cost, online source of Bach flower essences?  Herbal Remedies USA is a provider I can recommend.

4.    Music

Music is said to be the most direct path to the emotions. So... is there a musical style most appropriate for dealing with the often profound "disharmony" experienced by the betrayed?

Though not a frequent listener of classical music, I happened to hear, during a particularly trying time, a CD of music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. I knew, intuitively, these were healing sounds. Music written by Bach, Pachelbel, Vivaldi, and other Baroque composers, quickly became favorites (check Resources for CD suggestions). Later, my research helped me understand why the Baroque style of music may have a healing effect on those suffering from broken trust. I also discovered others have long known about the benefits of this music.

The Baroque style of classical music flourished in Europe from approximately 1600 to 1750 AD. The music features a steady rhythm combined with complex melodies. The extremely ordered and structured patterns in this style express stability. It is known that our energy system automatically adjusts to the rhythm or pulse of a musical piece. Steady rhythms tend to ground and restore the body’s vibrations when they are out of balance.

Baroque music also makes use of a technique where several melodic lines are combined and played in parallel to communicate contrasts. According to the Baroque master composer, J. S. Bach, emotions, especially the dark ones, could only be expressed musically through this technique.

The Baroque style has another interesting feature. A combination of tones to suggest unrelieved tension always resolves into another combination of tones suggesting unity, thereby subtly conveying trust to the listener - discord is always followed by harmony.

I believe all of these elements within the Baroque style make this music an ideal healing companion on the betrayal to trust journey. The music, at a vibrational level, is showing us the way.

More Poetry

After great pain, a formal feeling comes–

The Nerves sit ceremonious, like Tombs–

The stiff Heart questions was it He, that bore,

And Yesterday, or Centuries before?

The Feet, mechanical, go round-

Of Ground, or Air, or Ought–

A Wooden way

Regardless grown,

A Quartz contentment, like a stone-

This is the Hour of Lead-

Remembered, if outlived,

As Freezing persons, recollect the Snow–

First – Chill – then Stupor – then the letting go-

Emily Dickenson

Small Prayer

Change, move, dead clock, that this fresh day

May break with dazzling light to these sick eyes.

Burn, glare, old sun, so long unseen,

That time may find its sound again, and cleanse

Whatever it is that a wound remembers

After the healing ends.

Crossed Threads

The silken threads by viewless spinners spun,

Which float so idly on the summer air,

And help to make each summer morning fair,

Shining like silver in the summer sun,

Are caught by wayward breezes, one by one,

And blown to east and west and fastened there,

Weaving on all the roads their sudden snare.

No sign which road doth safest, freest run,

The wingèd insects know, that soar so gay

To meet their death upon each summer day.

How dare we any human deed arraign;

Attempt to reckon any moment’s cost;

Or any pathway trust as safe and plain

Because we see not where the threads have crossed?

Helen Hunt Jackson

Song

Let it be forgotten, as a flower is forgotten,

Forgotten as a fire that once was singing gold.

Let it be forgotten forever and ever–

Time is a kind friend, he will make us old.

If anyone asks, say it was forgotten

Long and long ago–

As a flower, as a fire, as a hushed footfall

In a long forgotten snow.

Music mirroring the full emotional range of a soul initiation can be found in the Baroque masterpiece composed by Heinrich Biber. The powerful, expressive mystery (rosary) sonatas were completed in 1676 and dedicated to the “sacred mysteries” of the Roman Catholic Church. For unknown reasons, the collection was never published in its day; a hand-written manuscript was only discovered and published in 1905. One beautiful rendition of Biber's Mystery Sonatas is listed on the Resources page.

Wishing you well,
